Our Story…

When you visit The Ship, you will always remember it. It is a pub like no other and you will immediately succumb to its charm.

Its joy is in its simplicity. Arriving at The Ship on a fine day, you may see people sitting in the garden, enjoying a drink in the sunshine.

Going through the front door is like walking into the home of an old friend. You will soon be in conversation with others in the room.

We wanted to buy and restore The Ship as the vibrant, warm, and friendly place it has been for past generations.

So, a group of us came together in 2025. We held a community meeting and a survey of local people’s opinions and ideas.

The result was overwhelming support to buy the pub as a community venture with a plethora of suggestions for making it a true social hub.

We formed a Community Benefit Society to take the plans forward with much help from Plunkett UK- a national charity supporting rural community business across the UK.

Through our campaign we raised enough to buy the freehold of the pub in November 2025, bringing it into community ownership. We did this by selling shares through the Portloe Community Benefit Society preserving an important community asset for future generations to come. We reopened with a bang on December 8th 2025! We couldn’t have done it without many volunteers , good will and fantastic support. Our success is based on hard graft and a gritty determination in partnership.
